Download 1.0.0 [New Install]
- SNClient.CAB – 22,978 bytes – December 16, 2009
- MD5 Checksum:
b46df89048334505ac280563c3aa3ea7
Requirements
- Windows Mobile 5, 6, or 6.1
- Any usable GPS device (built-in, Bluetooth, etc)
- .NET Compact Framework 3.5 (Free Download)
- Any usable Internet connection at run-time. This will work on 1xRTT or EVDO. I can’t promise it will work when you roam. It will inherit the connection settings you use in Internet Explorer on your device. That is to say…you can use this client anywhere you could use Internet Explorer…even if it’s awfully slow. (Incoming calls will interrupt the polling process for their duration.)
Instructions
- New install: Copy SNClient.CAB to your phone, browse to it with file manager, then execute the CAB file to install.
- Once installed, “Spotter Network” will be listed in the Start Menu. You can run it from there.
- After you run the program the first time, you will need to set up your Spotter Network ID (this is NOT the same as your callsign or username). Simply use the soft key for “Actions” then select “Settings”.
- On the “Settings” dialog, simply use your phone’s keys to clear out “changeme” and, instead, enter your Spotter Network ID. Once this is complete, simply select “Save”. Your preferences are all backed up to a file called “Preferences.xml” which lives in the same directory as the executable. You will not have to re-enter this information.
- Optionally, you can increase the “Polling Interval” setting if you’d like to update less frequently than 2 minutes. You cannot, however, change this to anything more frequent than 2 minutes.
- With your settings intact, you can start and stop the client by simply pressing the appropriate soft key on your device. For example, simply hit “Start”.
- Once the polling becomes active, your location will be acquired from your device’s GPS. This often takes 15 to 20 seconds. The number in parenthesis after the location indicator will let you know how many satellites are being used to calculate your position. The status indicator will update each time an update is sent to Spotter Network’s website.
- You can change your visibility settings while the program is running without having to start or stop the polling process. The checkboxes for both “Active” and “Public” are enabled by default. However, you can check or uncheck them at any time to affect your visibility settings. (They will, of course, take effect once the next location update is sent to Spotter Network.)
- When you are done using the client, it’s best to select “Stop” to halt the polling process and unhook your GPS device. Then, to free up resources and end the program simply select “Actions” and then “Quit”.
Bug Reports & Help
If something isn’t working right, please post a bug report in the Windows Mobile Client Forum on Spotter Network. You may also contact the developers directly at snclient@wxdata.us.
Notes
This is a first look at the program. I want to start off as basic as possible for this first deployment, since just fixing device compatibility may be an issue upfront. Ultimately, more features will be added as I’m content that the core functionality is usable on most Windows Mobile devices. (I am testing and developing on my HTC Touch Pro with Windows Mobile 6.1 on the Sprint network.)
