That's a good question, and one with no simple answer. That's because there's no real standards regarding what is and what isn't a mini pendant. All pendant lights are designed to shine light on a specific area. Think of them as spotlights in a theater. They can be used as your primary lighting for a room or they can be used as supplemental lighting to create drama, add more light to a specific area, such as a kitchen counter top, or create focal points in the room, such as adding pendants over a buffet in the dining room or over your desk in your home office.
However, when you hang the pendant light over your study table, do you have the same set of expectation? No way - simply dispersing medium amount of light to the entire study room would be a complete wastage. You would rather prefer the light to focus upon your study table and illuminate the table sufficiently such that you do not have to stress your eyes to read. The same can be said about your dining table - you would want the light to focus on the table rather than disperse all around.
Pendant lighting serves as a multifunctional type of lighting for a various rooms; whether they are over desks, night stands, or a traditional table, these lights are a luxurious home accessory. Yet another aspect of the lights to be admired, the length of the lighting is easily adjusted which can instantly alter the ambiance of the entire room. Placing one or more pendant lights over a kitchen table or throughout an entire dining room will no doubt create a more sleek, elegant look for the room overall. There are also ways to mix and match various luxury sconces with pendant lighting in a retro or shabby chic manner of décor.
If you're placing pendants above a workspace or table, they should ideally be mounted 30" to 36" above the surface. This allows you to get maximum lighting without the pendant fixture getting in the way. If you simply don't have the space to put them up this high, you may want to go with accent, track or recessed lighting options instead.
Kitchen pendant lighting has become rather popular over the years. While the conventional ceiling lighting has its own tradition and practice with its own set of advantages, using pendant lighting for kitchen also has its own benefits. The decor of good-looking pendant lighting is practically unbeatable, and it lets one focus on certain objects rather than spreading the lights everywhere.
